Asia’s most epic film festival opened online

Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2021

Asia’s one of the biggest film festivals, Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2021, announced more than 500 nominees & special screenings of Short Films from around the world.

This year’s festival will start from 11th June, and online venues beginning on 27th April. With the theme “CINEMADventure,” more than 500 short films from around the world will be screened during the event. One of the highlights is the new categories to set. For instance, the Smartphone Film Competition supported by Sony and the Vertical Theater Competition supported by smash give a sense of adventure.

Also, they will present a hybrid of live and online screenings that makes them unique. One of the exciting activities is a Q&A session in a virtual venue to connect with directors who cannot come to Japan due to the COVID-19 pandemic. VENTURE-like efforts, such as exploring the appeal of short films using AI and the world of AD to open up new aspects of short films.

Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia 2021 online screening started

Another highlight is the special screenings from around the world. It includes “David” nominated at the Cannes Film Festival and starring Will Ferrell (“Blades of Glory”). Moreover, “Miss Fortunate” starring Ben Whishaw (“Perfume”), ‘The Recorder Exam’ directed by Kim Bora (“House of Hummingbird”), and a documentary “Portrait Werner Herzog” shot in 1986 by Werner Herzog.

Under the Japanese film category, “Wish on a cocktail” starring Jun Kunimura and “The Supermission” starring Mariko Tsutsui will be released at the special screening. Additionally, the following films are available; “in-side-out” directed by Mirai Moriyama and starring Eita Nagayama from WOWOW Actors Short Film, “The Woman Who Performs” directed by Toshiyuki Teruya (Gori) and starring Hikari Mitsushima.

Furthermore, the international audience can enjoy around 40 past film festival nominees by Japanese directors.

The short film “Stardust Children,” a film shot entirely on a smartphone by Director Eiji Uchida (“Midnight Swan”), will have its world premiere. Several awards will be announced in advance for the film festival and at the Opening Ceremony on 11th June. The Official Competition supported by Sony Best Short Awards and the Grand Prix, the “George Lucas Award” will be announced at the awards ceremony on Mon, 21st June.
