Whenever there’s an anime-to-Hollywood movie adaptation, we have been burnt in the past. Even though it’s best to be wary of such a vision, we cannot help but feel excited about the journey of the huge mecha saga GUNDAM to Hollywood!

Gundam movie – Background Story

This movie is set to be made in collaboration with Legendary Entertainment and Bandai. You might wonder if it’d eventually meet a similar fate as the live-action adaptation plan for Evangelion and Akira movies that were promised to us. But it looks like live-action Gundam has indeed gotten a green light, as the project now has fixed its director, screenwriter, and importantly, an online distributor: Netflix.

Famous director Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) will direct the movie. Composing the script is Brian K. Vaughan, an expert comic book writer of works like Y: The Last Man, Saga. Brian has also contributed to Marvel and DC franchises such as X-Men, Batman, and Green Lantern.

The story for the live-action film version of Gundam is being kept under wraps for now. But the original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth.

Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted. The battles in the story, in which the characters pilot robots known as mobile suits, are wildly popular.

The Gundam universe is bursting with numerous storylines. Stories such as love and conflict along with the popular Gundam battles. Such stories depict the characters operating robot suits called Mobile Suits.
